West Ham V Liverpool 1978

Saturday April 29th 1978, One of my worst days in football 😢

West Ham needed to win against Liverpool to stay up. 

Train broke down on the way so had to wait for replacement bus service, so didn't get to the ground till 10 to 3, all the gates in the North bank and West side were all shut.

Went round the back to the East side and asked some bloke who turned out to be a Liverpool fan if anywhere was still open? he gave me some abuse and punched me in the face!!

I was a kid so I just walked off with a cut lip, tried everywhere else but still didn't get in.

We lost 2-0

 

Gate Receipts

Good crowds at that time, but the gate receipts are something else 😆

58,250 at the Hawthorns raising £8,050 (that's about 14p per person), Fulham 11p, Blackburn 15p and Bolton really expensive at 24p per person.

Played for Liverpool in the early 70's and he was pretty good.

Because of the card (below) saying he was a university graduate (he had a Maths degree), I always thought of him as being like a professor, because in those days only the very rich or total brainboxes went to University 😀

Another coloured-in photo, this one is from the Chelsea v Burnley FA Cup tie in 1956. 

Chelsea eventually won in the 5th game after 4 replays (those were the days).

Premier League 1992

Daily Mirror guide to the "new" Premier league in 1992.

Interesting season with Man Utd winning their first title in 25 years, the top 5 consisted of United, Aston Villa, Norwich, Blackburn and QPR. Previous champions Leeds ended up 17th?

The rest of the "so called Big 6" ended up with Liverpool 6th, Tottenham 8th, Man City 9th, Arsenal 10th and Chelsea 11th.

They followed that up by putting Ray Kennedy / Peter Cormack in the no.5 shirt

Torn Paper

From January 1964 this is all that remains of a torn out newspaper report of West Ham's 1-0 win over Liverpool.
Didn't really start saving cuttings etc till much later so surprised I had this. 

Looks like Tommy Lawrence was wearing cricket pads.

Played 350+ times for Liverpool in the 50's and 60's, and was in the 1958 England World cup team despite Liverpool only being a 2nd Division team at the time.
I probably know the name best because he was always first on the list of England players

Plus Cardiff as Welsh cup winners.

 

Arsenal Double

Arsenal beat Liverpool at Wembley in the Charity Shield last week, so here's some pics from a more famous meeting of the two, the 1971 FA Cup Final.
Arsenal won 2-1 in extra time to claim the double.

Kevin Keegan

Kevin Keegan of Liverpool.
Always wondered what all the fuss was about until I saw him play in the flesh. For a small guy he could outjump most tall defenders and never stopped running.
I was impressed. 

Kids Kits

Congratulations to Bayern Munich winning this season's Champions League.
This advert for kids kits from 1973 looks alright apart from the Munich kit looking more like Barcelona?
Sure they must have screwed up?

 

Shoot

During the late 60's and early 70's I would regularly buy Shoot magazine, also one called Goal.
Sadly as a kid you didn't think of saving them for the future for nostalgia purposes and as far as I know none of them were saved.
A few years back an old workmate gave me a copy from 1969 so here are a few pages from that issue.

 

First up former West Ham player Peter Eustace playing for Sheffield Wednesday.

 

 

Cardiff City from 1969, in the 2nd Division at the time and in those days were regulars in Europe due to winning the Welsh Cup.
John Toshack went to Liverpool soon after, and Leighton Phillips went on to get 58 caps for Wales.
