Coloured In Photos

Love these old coloured-in photos, not sure who the artist is? but brings to life some of the old photos. 

Here is Liverpool v Leeds 1956, Liverpool won 1-0.

Another coloured-in photo, this one is from the Chelsea v Burnley FA Cup tie in 1956. 

Chelsea eventually won in the 5th game after 4 replays (those were the days). 

Players are Peter Sillett and Peter McKay

 

Duncan McKenzie

Duncan McKenzie 

Made his name at Nottingham Forest before signing for Leeds during Brian Clough's 44 days reign.

Later went on to play for several clubs including Everton, Blackburn and Chelsea it is surprising that he didn't get any England caps at any level?

 

 

Chico Time

 Former Southend and Chelsea player Chico Hamilton who signed for Aston Villa in 1968.

 

Alan Hudson

One for Chelsea fans, Alan Hudson.
A skilful player always classed as a luxury player by England managers at the time, which is why he only won 2 England caps.
Remember seeing him play for Chelsea and Stoke and thinking he was really good.

Sad news that Jimmy Greaves has suffered a stroke :(
Best wishes to him and his family that he pulls through and can carry on a near normal life.

Jimmy is one of the legends of English football, 44 goals in only 57 games for England although sadly injured during the 1966 World cup triumph, where his replacement Geoff Hurst filled his boots so well that Jimmy couldn't get back into the team (no substitutes back then).
Earned his reputation with amazing goal scoring exploits at his first club Chelsea, and after a brief spell in Italy with Milan he returned to England with Tottenham where he scored over 200 goals, in his later days he had a spell at West Ham.
Best known by people of my age for his television work, on Saturday lunchtime's "on the ball" followed by "Saint and Greavesie" and regular appearances on footie related programmes.

West Ham Colts 1959

Probably the oldest West Ham programme I own is this one from the 1958/9 season, this was the Quarter final replay against Aston Villa which they won 3-2.

 

In the Semi-final they beat Arsenal 2-1 on aggregate after drawing the home leg 1-1 they won the away leg 1-0.
The FA Youth cup final saw them take on Blackburn, again they drew the home leg 1-1 but they narrowly lost 1-0 in the second leg to a disputed goal in extra time.

The line up is interesting as Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst went on to become England internationals and achieve world fame in 1966.
Eddie Bovington, Jack Burkett and Tony Scott had long careers at Upton Park and Harry Cripps went on to become a legend at Millwall after failing to play a league game for West Ham.

The squad had a very successful season as well as making this final they won the Southern junior floodit cup with a 1-0 win over Chelsea, and also beat an England youth XI by 8-1.

Southend Signings

Found this clipping from 1958, Southend signing 2 players from Chelsea.
Les Stubbs and Alan Dicks were both part of the Chelsea squad that won the League Championship in 1955, so this looked like a good bit of business.
Les Stubbs was returning to his home town club after 6 seasons at Chelsea where he played over a 100 games and scored 30+ goals.
Alan Dicks went on to play 4 seasons at Roots Hall before going into coaching and management, he is probably most famous for managing Bristol City during their 4 season stay in the old first division.

Ron Greenwood

Former West Ham and England manager Ron Greenwood.
In his playing days he played for Fulham, Chelsea, Brentford and Bradford Park Avenue, and won 1 cap for England B.
Before taking over at West Ham in 1961 he had been assistant manager at Arsenal.
